Communication: Information Sent to CBT Field Testing Schools, 5/9/17

Sent Tuesday, May 9, 2017

Dear Principal,

You are receiving this email because you are the head of a school that has elected to administer field tests on computer this year. We have more than 900 schools participating in field testing on computers—many of them will be new to computer-based testing (CBT) this year. We want to make sure to provide information and support to assist all of our schools with preparing for CBT.

Beginning today, Questar, the vendor who develops the CBT Grades 3-8 ELA and mathematics tests and online test delivery system, will start sending “Welcome to Nextera” emails to District Test Coordinators (DTCs) with login credentials to the Nextera Administration system where test coordinators, teachers, and proctors will manage and administer CBT for students.

Important: Nextera Admin is open at this time so that schools new to CBT can download and install the Nextera Secure Browser, which must be setup and tested on all student testing devices.

NYSED and Questar are loading class/student data to Nextera Admin this week. While this is occurring, please do not add new students until this data load has been completed (approximately May 15th). Adding new students this week that may also be part of the class/student data delivery will create a duplicate student record for CBT field testing students. We will send another message to all CBT field testing schools when it is time to update class/student information in Nextera Admin.

CBT field testing is an opportunity for schools to experience computer-based testing in a low-stakes environment. If students encounter a technical issue while testing, the student can simply “close the lid and walk away.” However, we do hope that schools take advantage of the low-stakes testing environment of field testing to learn more about how to work through minor CBT technical issues, should they arise.

What can your school do this week to prepare for CBT field testing?

  1. Install the Nextera Secure Browser on all student testing devices.
    1. The Nextera Secure Browser is available from Nextera Admin on the Help>Downloads page (more information is available on CBT Support: https://cbtsupport.nysed.gov/hc/en-us/articles/115001184243).
    2. There are different Secure Browsers that align to the different testing devices/operating systems supported for CBT (Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, Apple iPad, Google Chromebook).
    3. Some schools may have the Nextera Secure Browser installed from last year, which could be used to administer the CBT field tests this year.
      1. However, we are recommending an uninstall and fresh install as there have been minor updates: https://cbtsupport.nysed.gov/hc/en-us/articles/115002029466
    4. The CBT Practice Tests for all grades 3-8 ELA and mathematics are available to educators and students through the Nextera Secure Browser:
      1. Login information to ELA Practice Tests: https://cbtsupport.nysed.gov/hc/en-us/articles/115001238023
      2. Login information to Math Practice Tests: https://cbtsupport.nysed.gov/hc/en-us/articles/115001846966
