In response to feedback from our districts and schools, Questar has released a Equation Editor Sampler as part of the online Question Sampler suite of practice tests. This allows students to practice using the Equation Editor function buttons to "Show your work" as they will do for the operational CBT math exams in the spring.

The online Equation Editor Sampler is an "empty" Equation Editor response box that is not associated with a practice test question. Teachers can provide their own math question to students who can respond with the Equation Editor Sampler to become familiar with the Equation Editor as an online tool. The Equation Editor Sampler includes a "Show your work" box as well as an "Answer" box. Both Equation Editor response boxes can be resized onscreen by the student.

To use the Equation Editor Sampler, select Math, the grade level, and the "Equation Editor Sampler" from the Sampler pull-down menu:

The "empty" Equation Editor Sampler launches on-screen for students and includes all online tools as well as the Review screen that will be available in the operational CBT math exams in the spring:

On 11/2/2018 Questar released an update to the Response Box Samplers to include five “empty” CRs per Response Box Sampler! It is important that students have experience with the navigation and online testing tools prior to sitting for the CBT exams in the spring. Now, when teachers are using this resource in the classroom, students do not need to log out of the sampler after answering one question—they can use the same Sampler for up to five questions without logging out and then accessing the Sampler again. We hope this helps our teachers and students!

The Equation Editor Sampler function buttons are specific to the three grade bands: grades 3-4, grades 5-6, and grades 7-8. The Equation Editor Sampler function buttons are the same function buttons that will be available in the operational CBT math exams in the spring.

The Equation Editor Sampler is offered only in the online Question Sampler, which will allow for the opportunity to print the screen after students enter their responses. This allows a teacher to review the student responses. Students can use their browser's print function to print the screen after entering their response. We do not have plans at this time to offer the Equation Editor Sampler as part of the Secure Browser practice tests as that would not allow printing of student responses.

Beyond allowing students to practice responding to questions in the same manner they will when testing in the spring, use of the Equation Editor Sampler can help create new dialogue in the classroom for how students can use technology to show their work for math answers.
