2/8/19: CBT Weekly Updates, Grades 3-8 ELA and Math

CBT Weekly Updates, 2/8/19

  1. The first week of the CBT Winter Tour is almost over! The CBT Team is in Albany today at NERIC for the last show of the week.
  2. The CBT Team has been in Long Island, New Paltz, and Binghamton, and Albany this week. We hit the road again on Monday, February 11 for shows in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and a second show in Albany at NERIC.
  3. Hot topics on the roadshow include the following:
    • Drawing Tool
    • Alternate Language: how do students see both the alternate language and English test copies as they do in PBT?
      • Students test in the alternate language on-screen in CBT math, and Questar ships English paper copies to provide to students based on the quantities submitted as part of the CBT test order process.
      • This is very similar to “the magic” used for identifying how many Test Read paper copies to send to schools.
    • Text-to-Speech: this is always a hot topic with questions about the difference between “the robots” and human read.
  4. We want to remind folks that the voicepacks used for TTS are on the student’s computer. These are computer-device features. You will not find a tool within the Secure Browser to switch voicepacks.
    • Most likely, what is enabled on a student’s testing device today/now is what the student is familiar with: to prepare for operational CBT, please have those students take a “test drive” of TTS in the Question Sampler.
      • We are still working on an article to share that information (should be posted today!).
  5. Steve Katz asked a question to the crowd in Binghamton yesterday about print reference sheets: do we still need to print them and send them with the Teacher’s Directions now that students may be familiar with the online reference sheet options—please try to poll your schools or ask this question from time to time. We want feedback!
    • There is a new article posted to CBT Support to assist schools with locating the answer keys for the CBT practice tests: Where can I find the Answer Keys for the CBT Practice Tests?: https://cbtsupport.nysed.gov/hc/en-us/articles/360022595072
    • We are looking to move the Proctor Webinar to Friday, March 15 (the Ides of March!): does anyone see a problem with this?
      1. Schools are letting us know that March 20 is too late, but we are booked with travel the first two weeks of March.
  6. We are still working on the Simulation Webinar Q&A article. This may take another week! There was a lot of content!
